In 1919, at the AIA convention in Nashville TN, 15 architects came together to sow the seeds of an organization that would become known as NCARB.
They are now a non-profit corporation comprised of the architectural registration boards of the 50 U.S. states, Washington DC, Guam, The Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each registration board has state-appointed members and an administrator.
NCARB works as a council of these member boards and, through regulation, works to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public and assist the member boards in carrying out their duties.
Among other responsibilities, NCARB develops and recommends standards required of architectural registration candidates and provides a certification process.
